ABOUT

EUTOPIA? DIVERSITY IN A CHANGING EUROPE IS A LAB
THAT OFFERS PROFESSIONALS WHO WORK WITH YOUNG
PEOPLE A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND
THE REALITIES OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN A DIVERSE EUROPE
AND TO BE MORE EQUIPPED TO REACT UPON THEM.

Change has been inevitable in the history of Europe. Yet the changes in the European political climate and attitudes in the past decade have begun to question the unity of the EU and Europe. The rise of new nationalism, right-wing populism, and tightening migration regimes urge us to believe that diversity has gone too far. Legislative limitations are being issued on the freedom of expression and rights to protest, at the same time as “fake news” are as common and divisive as ever. Crises, one after another, challenge the ideals of European unity, while climate change brings about a brand-new set of challenges.

Does it all mean that one of the central values of Europe, diversity, has fallen out of favour? How is contemporary Europe dealing with diversity, and what is the role and potential of youth work to react?

EUtopia set out to work on these questions in the wake of youth radicalisation debate in 2012 and continues to find more and more topics to work on with youth work professionals across Europe.

EUtopia provides space and time to reflect upon the implications of the current developments on young people. It gives an opportunity to reflect also on youth workers' professional responsibilities in relation to those processes and encourage new practices in youth work. In a nutshell, EUtopia? Diversity in a Changing Europe is a creative, analytical and critical learning experiment for rethinking approaches to diversity in youth work.

In its latest form, EUtopia's learning process lasts for 8 months and is structured in 4 parts:
Our alumni are professionals who work with young people in non-formal learning, youth work, school, university, and community work settings.

“During the course I had many “aha” moments but for sure the most important ones were related to the discovery of how much the reality is complex and from how many perspectives you can observe the world. I feel much more accurate now in planning activities, taking into consideration the diversity. I feel more self-confident (even if self confidence is never enough) and more aware of the topic of diversity in its totality.

"EUtopia was one of my first international projects and as a fellow in European Studies, this proved to be a tremendous experience, acknowledging the role of international and multicultural settings for youth development. This motivated me to strive in my professional development, it also showed that there is so much more to explore and to learn. It is after this project that I submitted my application to be an Erasmus student in Prague. Now, seven year later, I have lived, studied and worked in four EU countries, so far. Interacting with young professionals, sharing our experience during this training course made me reflect on how I can contribute to solve certain issues and be a part of the positive change back home. Choosing a career in international affairs, also leaving abroad means I don't get to spend as much time as I would like in my home country. However, I must say that I never miss an opportunity to represent, write, research or speak about my country, and this is my own way of embracing my European identity. For this, I am forever grateful to EUtopia."

"When I initially applied for EUtopia I hoped to learn more about the overall picture of diversity in Europe and how youth work can approach these challenges. When I now look back to my almost 8-months long journey with EUtopia, I can say that this project has challenged me on one side personally in accepting my diversity, but also professionally as during this process I decided to change my work environment. I have to say that this project helped me understand that I want to work with young people, reduce divisions between them and support them in understanding that diversity is something that should be valued, not just tolerated. I have started working on some new projects and activities with the underlain of diversity as a value and topic. And not to forget, I still try to DIVE."

"I participated in the EUtopia in 2016, apart from an international internship many years ago, this was my first international training course. We were submerged in processes, ideas, new tools and good practices to review the possibilities and challenges of Europe's diversity. For me, this was a very inspiring training that sparked my interests and initiative to follow another Erasmus+ training about facilitating integration and organise a training myself about migration and integration. In my daily job I received recognition about these acquired competences and currently train and coach refugees, newcomers and Intra-European immigrants concerning integrational topics like housing, work, mobility, language. I love to tackle and fight against the thresholds that are implemented in our society, surely in this challenging political period. Together with my colleagues, we actively coach and train our clients and on the other hand try to influence the policy makers into institutional changes which focus on the strength of diversity. This course in my professional life wouldn’t have been possible without the seed that was planted during the EUtopia training."
MILOŠ LAKOVIĆ

"My name is Miloš Laković, I’m coming from a small country called Montenegro and I work in vocational high school as a professor. I participated in EUtopia training in 2018. It was held in three phases, first in Prizren (Kosovo*), second phase was at home town of every participant and third phase was in Riga (Latvia). This was very professionally planed project and before it started, we as participants were really prepared for every phase. This opportunity I got was worth every single moment, as I learned a lot about diversity of people, culture differences and I understood those who think different than me, I started to move my own boundaries. As I work in school with young people, this learning was like a fortune to me, now I know how to work with diverse students, I can understand their needs, no matter from which culture or religion they are. Amazing trainers helped every participant to think differently, to think deep on a specific problems in their region and country and to find diverse solutions. I even organized some workshops in few schools with another participant from my region so I tried to apply new tools that I ‘’stole’’ from this training. But the thing that was most important to me at the end of this training… I met crazy, smiley, diverse, amazingly different people and we were learning from each other, we were honestly happy through all of this training. We were like a family, we went to each other's houses, we travelled together, worked and some of us are still working together… I met my lifetime friends. Don’t miss this one of a kind opportunity!"

"EUtopia was my very first Erasmus+ training and at first I didn’t know what to expect. As soon as I met the facilitators and the other participants I knew that this will be an enriching experience. There are moments in your life when you just know that this will have an impact on your future path and this was one of them. Through the guidance and support of the facilitators and the enriching exchanges with the other participants from all around Europe I got to talk and reflect about different aspects of what the concept of diversity can mean and how it can be implemented not just into our work but also into our perspectives in general. The input and the tools developed during this training serve me and my work to this day and the friendships made are valuable sources of knowledge and beyond."
BOZINA STESEVIC

"Being part of the EUtopia story was and is a great experience, which changes perspective on how you see the world, and gives you an opportunity to be part of colourful network of EUtopia alumni. EUtopia lab, is what it stands for, an open space for rethinking about future of Europe and safe environment to develop and try out new methods and tools to incorporate yourself practically in that future. The experience that I got from going through all the labs in this programme is reshaping my out-of-the-box illusion to find out that I need to go over more boxes. I have developed with my fellow EUtopians different tools, some started as my idea, some were theirs, but we went together to many fun outcomes. If the EUtopia is a true country, their passport would be of my choosing. Anyhow, being able to visit magnificent Latvia was enough, everything aforementioned is a bonus, and what a bonus indeed."
THOMAS JAYNES
UNITED KINGDOM
"As a youth worker and community leader with a keen interest in politics and anthropology and a lifelong dedicated anti- fascist the two part EUtopia course I attended in 2017 namely in Riga, Latvia and Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on reflection I believe has been invaluable to both my personal and professional development. The project combined various different studying styles such as reading lists which included a variety of websites, books and lectures; pre and post course study tasks; seminars; guest talks (interestingly that included speakers from different sides of the debate on very sensitive cultural and political topics); and individual and group work which helped us analyse and compare and contrast social, political and economic issues in our own country, across the EU and non-EU member states. In particular, I really benefitted from the practical nature of the course because included was several study visits which allowed me to recognise firsthand the issues we had been discussing and allowed me to formulate my own responses. Overall, the EUtopia course enabled me to critically analyse the rise of nationalism and disunity in the EU placed in the context of longstanding sensitivities in differing communities in Latvia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, compare and contrast them to issues in Wales and the United Kingdom and helped and motivated me to apply practical solutions with an open-international mind."
